‘A Drop For Pussy’

John Morgan (English, 1822-1885)

For the last four decades, this exquisite painting has graced a private collection. However, it has now become available to adorn the walls of its new owner.

Born in North London in 1822 (although conflicting records from the Victoria and Albert Museum and the census indicate 1824), John Morgan pursued his artistic education at the School of Design. Achieving recognition while residing in Aylesbury in 1861, he gained fame with paintings such as 'The Jury' and 'The Country Auction.' Despite battling a chest ailment, he relocated to Guildford in the 1870s, producing notable works like 'The Storm.'

In a bid to advance his career, Morgan made a significant move to Paris, studying under renowned designers Thomas Couture (1815-1879) and Paul Delaroche (1797-1856). Influenced by Victorian genre painters like Thomas Webster and William Powell Frith, Morgan began exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Artists in 1852 and secured membership in the Society of British Artists in 1875. His contributions to exhibitions included notable pieces like 'Snowballing.'

In 1882, Morgan settled in Hastings, where he resided until his passing. His son, Frederick Morgan, a celebrated artist in his own right, specialized in childhood scenes, one of which is available for sale.

While under his father's tutelage, Frederick also gained experience in the photographic studio of Samuel Payne.
